Love Story

We look at each other
across America.

Through burial mounds
and silver-veined mountains
and hunched wheat,
we look at each other.

Then I get in bed alone
and listen to cicadas
emerge from the ground.

Just when I am ready
to let my life pass in silence,
they rise and sing,
rise and sing.
